10 Airlines now compatible with Apple's Passbook

Passbook enabled airlines

Think back to a few months ago—to September 2012, to be specific. This was the month of the Apple keynote announcing iOS6, the iPhone 5 and the glorious little app addition named "Passbook." Fatigue in Austria’s Cockpits

A survey carried out by Linz University among over 420 Austrian commercial airline pilots reveals that pilot fatigue is a reality in today’s airline operations. During the past 2 years, 85% of pilots have been in the cockpit while actually being too fatigued to fly the plane, with two thirds having experienced this more than once.

CrewAlert - for tired pilots with iPhones

Alertness is a key aspect of fitness for duty for airline flight deck and cabin crews. Alertness and fatigue have become increasingly important issues as airplane capabilities have increased, and the complexity of flight operations have grown. Understanding how humans function in a complex 24/7 world has been a focus for scientists, regulators, and airline safety officers all over the world.

As part of a joint safety initiative, Boeing and Jeppesen have been developing tools for allowing better management of alertness and fatigue. CrewAlert is the first app designed specifically to help airlines and their crews manage alertness and fatigue. Built on the Boeing Alertness Model (BAM), a mathematical model of alertness, the CrewAlert app puts scientific knowledge in the palm of your hand.

Mobile media company JiWire and satellite broadband provider Row 44 are teaming up to deliver an in-flight Wi-Fi system that will come to you via advertising support.

Southwest and Alaska Airlines have already begun to test Row 44-enabled Wi-Fi. When fully implemented, the new ad delivery network will make it possible for advertisers to target the coveted “business traveler” demographic. The system is expected to launch fully this fall.
